What is 10DLC?
Also called ten dlc, 10 dlc, a2p 10dlc, long code messaging
10DLC, meaning 10-Digit Long Code, is the framework US carriers use for application-to-person text messaging sent from ordinary ten-digit phone numbers. Businesses register their organisation and each messaging campaign, and in exchange get sanctioned throughput instead of having their traffic filtered.
Why registration became compulsory
Businesses had been sending bulk messages from standard numbers that were only ever meant for person-to-person texting, which made filtering unwanted traffic nearly impossible for carriers. 10DLC created a register: identify the business, describe the campaign, get a throughput allowance. Unregistered traffic is now heavily filtered or blocked outright, so registration is effectively mandatory rather than advisory.
What a campaign registration asks for
You register the legal entity first, with details that must match public records, then each campaign separately with its use case, sample messages, and how consent is collected and revoked. The sample messages have to reflect what you will actually send. Vague or inaccurate registrations are the usual reason for rejection, and re-registration takes time you will not have during a launch.
Throughput, and why messages queue
Registration does not buy unlimited sending. Each campaign gets a throughput allowance expressed in message segments per second, and it is derived from your brand's trust score and the use case you registered. Exceed it and messages queue rather than fail, which shows up as texts arriving late instead of not at all, and is easy to misdiagnose. If you plan a burst, an appointment reminder run or a launch announcement, check the allowance against the volume before rather than after.
