What is Vanity number?
Also called custom phone number, memorable number, word number
A vanity number is one selected because the digits are easy to remember: they spell a word on the telephone keypad, such as 1-800-FLOWERS, or form a pattern like repeating or sequential digits. Functionally it is an ordinary phone number; the only difference is that somebody went looking for it rather than accepting whatever was next in the pool.
Why the good ones are hard to get
Short, obvious words on the 800 prefix were claimed decades ago and rarely come back. Availability is much better on newer prefixes such as 844 and 833, simply because less of the inventory has been issued. The practical approach is to decide on the pattern you want, then search across all seven toll-free prefixes rather than fixing on 800 and being disappointed.
When it is worth the effort
A vanity number earns its keep where the number is heard rather than read: radio, podcasts, vehicle livery, anywhere a listener cannot copy and paste. If your number mostly appears on a website where people tap it, memorability is worth much less, and an ordinary local number in the right area code may do more for you.
Publish the digits as well as the word
A number that spells a word only helps people who can see a keypad and are willing to look. Anyone on a modern smartphone is tapping a link, and plenty of keypads no longer print letters at all. The convention that works is to publish both, as in 1-844-EXAMPLE (1-844-392-6753), so the word does the remembering and the digits do the dialling. Testing that the digits are correct before printing them anywhere is a step worth not skipping.
